IDEAS – Marine Discovery Centre

Sometimes finding work experience with Animals can be difficult, however, other experiences are equally important.
The Marine Careers Discovery Centre at Queenscliff run two marine career focused days during the school holidays in 2011 the dates are:
- Friday April 15 2011 &
- Friday 8th July 2011
Presenters include biologists, managers, chemists, tourism operators, education officers, PhD Students and fisheries officers. Students will tour behind the scenes and participate in a fish dissection.

PLACES – Melbourne Aquarium

The Melbourne Aquarium processes work experience applications in October/November for the following year.
The Aquarium also runs a number of different activities throughout the year to expose students to the various careers within this industry – although not strictly ‘work experience’ it is a ‘valuable experience’ and well worth including on your resume! PLACES – Zoos – Melbourne / Healesville / Werribee

Applications for placements at zoo’s is extremely competitive and you have to demonstrate a passion for animals and already have a career pathway mapped out into this industry. Applications open in August/September for work experience placements in the follow year. Applications are made via your Careers Advisor at school. Keep an eye on your school newsletters.
There are other ways to gain “experience” at the zoos – for example Healesville run a program called “Keeper for a Day” during the school holidays. To increase your chances of securing a work experience week at the GV Equine Hospital (it is very competitive) you should lodge your application in February/March. Due to the nature of the industry, prior experience with horses is highly desirable.
